Some things you wrote down:

-Easy Mac and pizza
-Family and friends

I want to let you all know that I am SO very thankful for every one of you.  You have made my first semester here so much fun and I have learned a lot from all of you.  I hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving, and I will see you all Monday!

Catholics Come Home

Those of you who attended the Guardian's Gala last night had the pleasure of hearing Tom Peterson, founder of Catholics Come Home, speak to us about evangelizing and bringing other Catholics back to the church.  After the Gala, he was autographing his book, and we received a generous donation of a signed copy of the book.  His message to all of us:

John Paul II Students--love somebody to heaven!
This is a wonderful message for all of us to remember.

A Milestone!

Good news!  As of today, we have 1,500 items in the catalog, ready to be checked out!  Every item in the library has been donated to us by your family, friends, and generous members of the community who want you to have a fabulous library!  The number of books grows every week, but I'm really excited to be at 1,500!
This was the library in June:

And THIS is the library today:

Why are YOU Thankful?

In honor of Thanksgiving, this month the library tree is dedicated to counting our blessings.  Stop by Ms. Phelan's desk, pick a leaf, write down something you are thankful for, and add it to the tree!  Let's fill the tree with thanks!

All Saints Day

November 1st is All Saints Day!  This day commemorates all the saints, known and unknown.  It is sometimes called the Feast of All Saints or All Hallow's Day (Halloween, or "Hallow's Eve," got its origins from this feast).  All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will celebrate Mass on Friday this week instead of Wednesday in honor of this day.  Come check out our display of books on the saints in the library!

Neil Gaiman on Libraries

Neil Gaiman, author and illustrator, comments on libraries, librarians, and reading for pleasure:

"It's important for people to tell you what side they are on and why, and whether they might be biased. A declaration of members' interests, of a sort. So, I am going to be talking to you about reading. I'm going to tell you that libraries are important. I'm going to suggest that reading fiction, that reading for pleasure, is one of the most important things one can do. I'm going to make an impassioned plea for people to understand what libraries and librarians are, and to preserve both of these things.
And I am biased, obviously and enormously: I'm an author, often an author of fiction. I write for children and for adults. For about 30 years I have been earning my living though my words, mostly by making things up and writing them down. It is obviously in my interest for people to read, for them to read fiction, for libraries and librarians to exist and help foster a love of reading and places in which reading can occur."

Be Missionaries Without Borders!

At World Youth Day, Pope Francis commissioned young people to be "missionaries without borders"--to share the faith at all times, not just "if you would like to, if you have the time."  Pope Francis tells us, just as Jesus and Pope John Paul II did, "Be not afraid!"
